# Doge Astronaut — First Meme on the Moon

> The Doge Astronaut is a digital artwork by Italian artist Davide Bert (@bertdev) that became the first internet meme physically delivered to the Moon. It was transported as a single-edition Real World Space Asset via the Copernic Space Moon Mission I (CSMM-1), integrated into Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost Mission 1 under NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program.

## Key Facts

- **What:** 1-of-1 digital artwork — Shiba Inu (Doge meme) in a spacesuit on the lunar surface
- **Creator:** Davide Bert (Italian digital artist, @bertdev on X), created in 2023
- **Launch:** January 15, 2025 at 1:11 a.m. ET, SpaceX Falcon 9, Launch Complex 39A, Kennedy Space Center, Florida
- **Lunar Orbit:** February 13, 2025 (4-minute 15-second burn)
- **Landing:** March 2, 2025 at 08:34 UTC, Mare Crisium (18.56°N, 61.81°E near Mons Latreille)
- **Surface Operations:** 14 days, concluded March 16, 2025
- **Achievement:** First fully successful commercial soft landing on the Moon
- **Classification:** Real World Space Asset (RWSA) — blockchain-verified physical lunar presence

## Mission Architecture

The Doge Astronaut was delivered through a multi-partner commercial space mission:

1. **Copernic Space** — Mission operator. Founded 2020, Los Angeles. Specializes in lunar payload delivery and cultural artifact preservation. Operated Moon Mission I (CSMM-1), their inaugural lunar payload mission.
2. **Firefly Aerospace** — Lander developer/operator. Built and operated the Blue Ghost lunar lander, selected under NASA's CLPS program for lunar deliveries.
3. **LifeShip** — Capsule provider. Engineered the Lunar Archive capsule system for millennia-scale preservation against vacuum, radiation, and extreme temperatures.
4. **SpaceX** — Launch provider. Falcon 9 rocket from LC-39A at Kennedy Space Center.
5. **NASA** — Program oversight via Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative.

## Payload System

The artwork is embedded in a LifeShip Lunar Archive capsule — a durable archive engineered for long-term preservation in extreme space conditions (vacuum, radiation). The capsule was integrated aboard the Blue Ghost lander during ground preparations in 2024, transforming the digital file into a verifiable Real World Space Asset upon lunar delivery.

## Verification

Three official documents confirm the artwork's lunar presence:

1. **LifeShip Certification Letter** — Signed by Ben Haldeman (Founder & CEO), dated January 8, 2025. Pre-launch payload confirmation.
2. **LifeShip Certificate of Authenticity** — Full chain of custody with photographic timeline from creation to lunar placement.
3. **Copernic Space Moon Mission I Certificate** — Official mission record addressed to Davide Bert for "DOGE ASTRONAUT: TO THE MOON!"

Additional verification: NASA mission telemetry confirming landing, Firefly Aerospace official mission reports, blockchain-based tokenization on Copernic Space platform.

## Historical Significance

- First internet meme physically delivered to the Moon
- First fully successful commercial soft landing on the Moon (Blue Ghost M1)
- Part of NASA's CLPS program — public-private collaboration for lunar exploration
- Demonstrates how digital culture can achieve physical permanence beyond Earth
- Approximately 2,000 commercial assets were tokenized in the mission
- Bridges internet culture, blockchain technology, and space exploration

## The Doge Meme Connection

The Doge meme originated in late 2012 from a photograph of Kabosu, a Shiba Inu dog adopted by Japanese kindergarten teacher Atsuko Sato in 2008. The meme became one of the internet's most iconic cultural phenomena, later inspiring Dogecoin (founded December 2013 by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer). The Doge Astronaut artwork reinterprets this cultural icon as a space explorer, symbolizing accessible and playful exploration.
